The deputy Governor of Edo State Dr. Pius Odubu narrowly escaped assassination yesterday when gunmen attacked him while he was meeting delegates from Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area, injuring an operative of the Department of State Security, three civilians and a police officer.
It was reported that Odubu who is also the Governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 10 gubernatorial election was earlier locked out of the party’s secretariat in Fugar, purportedly on the instruction of a Government house official when he went to meet with delegates. It was however the intervention of angry delegates who broke the gate that enabled Odubu eventually hold the meeting.
He was said to have left for Auchi and was meeting with some delegates when the gunmen suddenly appeared, firing gunshots at his entourage and destroyed canopies.
Those injured are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
