Abuja – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has forcefully debunked a sensational online report alleging that the recent cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was tied to an attempted military coup.
In a comprehensive statement released late yesterday, the DHQ categorically waved off the report as “entirely false, malicious, and intended to cause unnecessary tension” among citizens. The publication had also allegedly tried to connect the cancellation to a separate, ongoing investigation involving the arrest of 16 military officers.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, signed the statement and provided clear, official reasons for the decision to forgo the traditional Independence Day parade.
According to the DHQ, the cancellation was implemented for two primary reasons:
- To allow Mr. President to attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country.
- To enable members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to “sustain the momentum on the fight against terrorism, insurgency and banditry” across the nation.
The Defence Headquarters stressed that linking this pragmatic rescheduling decision to high-stakes political unrest is a deliberate act of misinformation by “purveyors of misinformation and enemies of our nation.”
Internal Probe Clarified
Addressing the spurious link made between the cancelled celebrations and the recent arrest of military personnel, the DHQ reiterated that the internal matter is routine and strictly disciplinary.
“The ongoing investigation involving the sixteen officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism is maintained within the ranks,” General Gusau stated.
The DHQ confirmed that an investigative panel has been formally constituted, and a pledge was made that its findings would be eventually made public, emphasizing the military’s commitment to transparency in its internal affairs.
Commitment to Democracy Unwavering
Concluding its resolute denial, the DHQ reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ unshakeable loyalty to the civilian government and the democratic process, sending a powerful message of stability to the public.
“Democracy is forever,” the statement asserted, urging the public to continue providing support to security agents. The DHQ emphasized the close working relationship between the Federal Government, the Legislature, and the Judiciary for the nation’s safety and development.
The DHQ concluded with a final assurance: “The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”
