Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area (LGA), Hon. Dr. Agiriye Monima Harry, has assured the Legal Aid Council of his administration’s commitment to improving their working conditions. During a courtesy visit on February 26th, he pledged to renovate the dilapidated structure currently housing young lawyers at the Degema Consulate.
Responding to requests from the Legal Aid Council, Harry confirmed that the renovation of the corps members’ lodge, which will accommodate young lawyers serving their mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in the LGA, will be the third of such renovation and equipping project undertaken by his administration. He emphasised his commitment to fostering a conducive working environment for the lawyers through a collaborative partnership.
Earlier, Bar. Anita Chukwuka, the State Coordinator of the Legal Aid Council, explained the necessity of a functional office in Degema due to the presence of the Correctional Centre. She highlighted the group’s mandate to provide pro bono legal services to inmates and indigent individuals who often lack access to legal representation due to financial limitations.
Chukwuka outlined the challenges faced by the Legal Aid Council, including the lack of suitable accommodation for NYSC lawyers and adequate office space. She appealed to the LGA Chairman for support in alleviating these challenges and facilitating the council’s work.
Harry’s commitment to renovating the lawyers’ quarters and partnering with the Legal Aid Council demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the legal needs of the community and supporting the delivery of justice.
