Degema Chairman inaugurates flood, Food and Nutrition Committees

To mitigate against the impact of the impending flood in Degema Local Government Area, the Chairman of Council, Dr. Agiriye Monima Harry, has inaugurated a 12 man flood Committee.

Addressing members of the Committee, during the inaugural meeting at the Council Secretariat in Degema on Friday October 25th, Harry said the Committee should focus on public enlightenment to educate the masses on preventive measures against the impact of the flood that has affected some communities in the LGA.

The Committee which has the Vice Chairman of the LGA, Mrs. Ibimina Igoni Jaja, who also doubles as Supervisor for Health, was mandated to make adequate plans for search and rescue, if the case arises, embark on community engagements to talk about precautionary measures to adopt during and after the floods.

Speaking further, he said drainages at Degema Community and other locations will be cleaned.

“Suffice it to say that we have chosen this place as one of the IDP camps, that is the internally displaced peoples camp. Bakana townhall is the second and community Secondary School in Obuama is the third. I know that it is unlikely that we will get to that point where we will move people,” he stressed.

He disclosed that despite having a reduction of the water levels in ke and some other communities that were flooded, there is need for the committee to produce sensitization materials, including flyers that will have messages on health, noting that fumigation will be carried out in such communities.

Similarly, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s new food policy, the Food and Nutrition Committee of Degema LGA has been inaugurated today, by the Council Chairman.

The Committee has its membership as follows:

• Vice Chairman of Council- Chairman
• MOH- Secretary,
  others to serve as members include: HLGA, HPM, LGA Social Mobiliser, Treasurer of Council, Productive Heath Officer, Nutrition Officer, and Director of Budget and Statistics.

The terms of reference according to the Chairman includes:

• To provide technical and professional assistance to the Committee on food and nutrition.
• Propose and review on continuous basis, programs that can potentially impact on food and nutrition issues
• implement appropriate strategies for program monitoring and evaluation
• Supporting the office of the LGA Vice Chairman in the maintenance of ongoing advocacy on food and nutrition, amongst several others.

He charged members of the two Committees to hit the ground running by presenting their budgets and other requests that would assist in the efficient delivery on their tasks.
