Sokoto, Nigeria — At least six people have died and three others are missing after a boat capsized in the Garin Faji area of Sokoto State. The victims were among dozens of residents attempting to flee an attack by armed bandits.
According to the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), a senior official confirmed that 19 people were rescued from the water, but rescue operations are still underway to find the three missing passengers. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, stated that the boat was carrying a large number of villagers trying to escape the raid when it overturned.
This tragedy is the second of its kind in less than a week. Just six days ago, a similar accident occurred in the neighboring Goronyo Local Government Area, where four people drowned while also trying to escape a bandit raid. The recurring incidents highlight the perilous situations faced by communities in the region as they seek safety from armed groups.
