Yusuf Buhari, the son of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State.
The official results were announced on Saturday evening in Daura by Lawal Garba, the Chairman of the constituency’s APC primary election committee.
According to the declared figures, Mr Buhari secured a landslide victory, polling 17,342 votes to decisively defeat his sole opponent, Auwalu Lawan Daura, who garnered 480 votes. Following the tally, Mr Garba officially declared the younger Buhari as the APC flag-bearer for the constituency ahead of the 2027 legislative elections.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Buhari expressed his profound gratitude to party members, delegates, and the wider electorate across the three local government areas for their overwhelming mandate.
He emphasised that the primary was merely an internal process, noting that the ultimate goal remains ensuring the ruling party retains the federal constituency in the general elections.
“I will embrace everyone and carry all party members along to ensure that APC emerges victorious in the general elections,” Mr Buhari stated. “I sincerely thank the people of Daura, Sandamu, and Mai’adua for coming out in large numbers to support me.”
The decisive outcome has, however, been rejected by his opponent, Auwalu Lawan Daura himself the son of the former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura.
Addressing the media shortly after the collation exercise, the younger Daura expressed strong dissatisfaction with the conduct of the direct primary, alleging that the election was marred by widespread irregularities and failed to comply with the party’s established guidelines.
Mr Daura claimed that the integrity of the headcount was severely compromised: Unregistered Voters: He alleged that a significant number of individuals who participated in the lines were not registered APC members. Lack of Accreditation: He maintained that many voters did not possess valid party membership cards. Questionable Tallying: He described the manner of counting the open-ballot queues as “highly questionable.”
“I am not satisfied with what happened today. Evidence is everywhere showing the injustice that was done,” Mr Daura asserted. He added that his participation was driven by a belief in internal democracy and a level playing field, warning that transparent processes are vital to sustaining members’ confidence in the APC.
The petition is expected to be forwarded to the APC Primary Election Appeals Committee for review as the party prepares to consolidate its strongholds in the North-West.
