A tragic road accident on Cele Expressway in Lagos State resulted in the death of one pedestrian and injuries to five others. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, involved a 40-foot container truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles on the inward Oshodi section of the expressway.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq reporting that preliminary investigations revealed the truck, carrying two large containers, experienced a critical brake failure while traveling at excessive speed. This loss of control led to the containers detaching and collapsing onto the commercial and private vehicles, causing extensive damage and casualties.
Africa Update gathered from sources that among the injured was a commercial bus driver who sustained multiple compound fractures to his arm and leg. All injured parties were promptly transported to the General Hospital, Isolo, by LASAMBUS for medical treatment.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He used the incident to reiterate the critical importance of routine mechanical inspections for articulated vehicles, particularly those carrying containers, with a focus on braking systems. He also urged all motorists to adhere to speed limits and traffic laws to ensure road safety.
