Bonny LGA Mourns Boat Mishap Victims, Calls for Improved Maritime Safety

The Bonny Local Government Area (LGA) is in mourning following a tragic boat accident on the Bonny Sea on Sunday, January 19th, which claimed the lives of two adults and a young child.

In a statement released on Wednesday by LGA Secretary John Gabriel-Pepple, the Chairman, Hon. Dame Anengi Claude-Wilcox expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Preliminary findings suggest a sudden storm caused the boat to capsize, leading to the devastating loss of life.

The council confirmed that 19 survivors were immediately hospitalized, with all medical expenses covered by the LGA.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims,” Chairman Claude-Wilcox stated. “May God grant you all the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. The council shares in this grief and pain, and we pray that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”

The statement also made a disturbing revelation: another passenger boat reportedly arrived at the scene while the victims were struggling but failed to offer assistance. The council is urging anyone with information about this boat or its operator to contact the council secretary at 08035085782.

Claude-Wilcox urged travelers to exercise caution during inclement weather and strictly adhere to safety regulations on passenger ferries to prevent future tragedies.
