Africa Update celebrates 10th Anniversary

It was a night of fun, glamour and nostalgia, as the Publisher and Editor in Chief, of Africa Update, Gloria Boma Harry, shared her experiences with guests who graced the 10th anniversary celebration of the newspaper at the Hago Heights Event Centre, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on August 29.

Harry, said it’s been a journey filled with tears and joy but her passion for the profession has kept the flag flying.

Surviving and making a mark in a male dominated business has come with several challenges which she has surmounted with the help of her team and the grace of God.

The Publisher noted that, her journey into journalism and publishing started over 15 years ago, when Springpoint magazine commenced operations. She stated that the magazine which was originally an investigative journal, transformed into an event and services magazine in 2011 when the Update was founded.

The Update, which was the name used was changed to Africa Update in 2014, when her refusal to support the presidential bid of an incumbent President, led to the destruction of her newspaper. She said her colleague, had proceeded to register a newspaper using the name, The Update, when he discovered the she did not have the ISSN for her newspaper at the time.

She revealed that the action taken by her colleague, led to the birth of Africa Update, a name that has created a niche for her publication.

She expressed gratitude to her readers and advertisers who have kept faith with the brand, making it one of the best in Rivers State and the Niger Delta Region, with over one million hits and views on her website.

Harry, opined that Africa Update is poised for greatness as she looks forward to many more years of fulfilling media practice.
