The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas CFR, has announced the appointment of Administrators to oversee the 23 Local Government Areas of the state. This development was made public in a Government Special Announcement.
The Administrator has also approved the reconstitution of several Boards of Agencies, Commissions, and Parastatals that were previously suspended.
According to the announcement, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika, all the appointments take effect from Monday, the 7th of April 2025. The specific names of the appointed Administrators and the reconstituted boards were not included in the initial announcement.
This move comes following a recent court order from the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, which had temporarily barred the Sole Administrator from appointing Sole Administrators to run the local councils. The implications of this announcement in light of the court order remain to be seen.
The appointment of these Administrators follows the termination of the tenure of the last elected local council chairmen, a consequence of a Supreme Court judgment on February 28th that declared their election illegal. Subsequently, the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) had been in charge of the 23 local government councils.
The reconstitution of the previously suspended Boards of Agencies, Commissions, and Parastatals signals a further restructuring of the state’s administrative framework under the current leadership.
