Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a stark warning to the traditional rulers of Ifon, Erin Osun, and Ilobu, threatening their dethronement should violence erupt again in the long-troubled communities. This decisive stance follows a period of relative calm after devastating clashes that resulted in fatalities and widespread property destruction.

In a statement released on Monday, March 31, 2025, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke conveyed his zero-tolerance policy amidst reports of planned attacks by unidentified groups. “In the midst of Sallah celebrations, I received reports of planned conflict around Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun. Security agencies have intensified surveillance to prevent any attacks,” the statement read.

Governor Adeleke has ordered an expedited investigation into key figures involved in the conflict, holding traditional rulers directly accountable for maintaining peace within their domains. “I will remove from office any traditional ruler where violence recurs. Royal fathers must control their subjects. Enough is enough,” he declared.

The governor emphasized that the recently relaxed curfew, reduced from 24 to 17 hours as a humanitarian gesture, would be immediately reinstated if violence flares up again. “The curfew was eased on humanitarian grounds. Any attempt to exploit this for renewed violence will result in the immediate re-imposition of a 24-hour curfew,” he stated.

The conflict, rooted in a protracted land dispute, escalated on March 20, 2025, leading to loss of life and extensive property damage. Residents fled their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring communities. During a recent tour of the affected areas, Governor Adeleke witnessed firsthand the devastation, including burnt houses, filling stations, and vehicles.

The communities have exchanged accusations, with Ilobu on one side and Erin Osun and Ifon Osun on the other. To quell the unrest, Governor Adeleke initially imposed a 24-hour curfew, later adjusted to a 17-hour curfew. He also directed the establishment of displacement camps and the distribution of relief materials.

Governor Adeleke’s latest warning underscores his administration’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability to the region.
