The political landscape of Nasarawa State experienced a significant shift on Monday as the State’s Accountant-General, Musa Mohammed, formally resigned his appointment to pursue the governorship seat in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

Mr Mohammed, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the high-profile announcement in Lafia during a spirited political rally. Addressing a throng of supporters, the former treasury chief declared his intention to seek the state’s highest executive office, asserting that his entry into the race was a response to the “persistent and overwhelming” entreaties from various stakeholders across the state.

Characterising his departure from the civil service as a necessary sacrifice for the greater good of the state, Mr Mohammed explained that he could no longer ignore the calls of his constituents.

“I have decided to sacrifice my stay in the office of the Accountant-General of Nasarawa State in response to your calls,” he informed the assembly. “I have resigned my appointment. I wish to express my profound appreciation to my principal, His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Sule, for approving my resignation and affording me the latitude to pursue this ambition.”

The former Accountant-General anchored his campaign on the pillar of institutional stability. He pledged that, if elected, his administration would serve as a vehicle for the consolidation of the developmental milestones achieved under the incumbent Governor.

“I shall endeavour to build upon the significant successes recorded by the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule,” Mr Mohammed stated. “Having been an integral part of this government, I have been privileged to learn from the Governor’s leadership capacity, resourcefulness, and strategic vision. I assure the people of Nasarawa that I shall not disappoint their expectations.”

Mr Mohammed’s political pedigree suggests a formidable candidacy. Prior to his appointment as Accountant-General in 2023, he possessed extensive experience in the legislative arm of government. He notably served as the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly for two consecutive terms between 2007 and 2015, providing him with a rare blend of fiscal oversight and legislative expertise.

The formal declaration by such a high-ranking official is expected to trigger a series of realignments within the Nasarawa State APC as the party begins its internal calibration for the 2027 electoral cycle.
