The remains of the late Senator Barinada “Barry” Mpigi arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Thursday, marking a poignant homecoming for the lawmaker ahead of his interment scheduled for this weekend.

The body of the distinguished Senator, who represented the Rivers South-East Senatorial District with notable vigour, was received with solemn tributes by a high-powered delegation led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Excellency Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON. The Minister was joined by a phalanx of elders, political associates, and dignitaries from across the Federation, all gathered to pay their respects to a man widely regarded as a cornerstone of Rivers State politics.

Senator Mpigi transitioned on 19th February 2026, in London, at the age of 64 following a brief illness. Prior to the final flight to his home state, his remains were received in Abuja by Minister Wike and other national leaders for a preliminary period of mourning in the nation’s capital.

The atmosphere at the airport was one of profound reflection as the casket was lowered from the aircraft. For many in attendance, the arrival represented the final homecoming of a “political titan” who had served as a formidable voice for his constituents within the National Assembly.

As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Senator Mpigi was esteemed for his unwavering commitment to infrastructural development and his tireless advocacy for the welfare of the people of Rivers State. His political career was defined by a rare blend of grassroots accessibility and national influence.

Minister Wike, who had previously travelled to London to offer personal condolences to the bereaved family and coordinate the repatriation of the Senator’s remains, led the official reception. He was accompanied by the Senator’s widow, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, their children, and close kin.

In recognition of his impact, condolence registers have been opened at the Senator’s residences in Port Harcourt and Abuja, as well as at his hometown and constituency offices. Messages of sympathy have continued to pour in from traditional rulers, political adversaries, and the common man alike, all acknowledging his dedication to public service.

The obsequies for the late Senator are expected to reach their zenith this weekend in Rivers State. The scheduled activities include a series of tributes, nights of prayer, and a formal interment ceremony.

Leaders from across various political denominations and ethnic groups have begun arriving in Port Harcourt to bid a final farewell to an illustrious son of the soil. As the state enters a period of mourning, the prevailing sentiment is one of gratitude for a life spent in the service of the republic.
