Nigerian music superstar Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has saved the lives of a dying man and a woman with the issue of blood, Rotarians recount.
The musician’s gesture formed part of a conversation at the weekly fellowship of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden City on July 24th, when a consultant gynaecologist, Rtn. Prof. Emmanuel Oranu’s Representative Dr. Olaka, presented a paper on Maternal and Newborn health.
Rotarian Iseleya Toby, while criticizing the inhumane attitude of some medical practitioners, said a woman who frantically ran after Burna Boy, who was leaving the University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital after paying the medical bills of scores of people, received the sum of ₦300,000 that was needed for the commencement of medical care for her critically sick husband.
Toby said Burna Boy was touched by her pitiable tale and immediately gave her the money needed and a little extra.
You will recall that over 200 patients benefited from the medical outreach last month.
Earlier in his presentation, Dr. Olaka, noted that the high rate of maternal and newborn mortality was increasing daily and has become a source of concern for medical practitioners.
He disclosed that unhealthy medical choices and practices were responsible for the alarming rates of maternal mortality.
He observed that lack of blood in the health facilities, was responsible for most maternal and newborn death, because there might be bleeding during delivery, and non availability of blood had grave consequences.
He encouraged the public to imbibe the habit of donating blood and other monetary gift to the medical facilities to eliminate cases of maternal and child mortality.
He however hinted that despite having donors for blood, money is still required to screen and bag this blood.
He also narrated the tale of a lady who had a medical condition that left her bleeding consistently for one year through her vagina.
On hearing about her situation, Burna Boy had paid for the surgery, for the woman who had spent about a year at the hospital due to lack of fund to foot the medical procedure .
Olaka urged well meaning citizens to support medical facilities through constant donations or the provision of basic requirements such as hand gloves and magnesium sulphate in all labour wards.
He opined that government alone can not fix the problems facing the health sector, particularly as it concerns the ongoing cervical cancer programme that has been ongoing since 2020.
Olaka tasked government officials and the public to ensure that what needs to be done at the medical facilities are given the required attention.
This presentation is coming fortnight after Emeka Kingsley Nwaneri took over the mantle of leadership from Karina Igonikon as President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden City, at the installation ceremony that held at landmark hotel.
