Madagascar Coup Leader Names New PM, Solidifying Control Amid Ex-President’s Defiance

Antananarivo—Madagascar’s new military strongman, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, has moved to solidify his nascent government by naming experienced businessman and consultant Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the island nation’s new Prime Minister on Monday.

The appointment comes just days after Colonel Randrianirina was sworn in as President on Friday, completing the military’s swift takeover of the government. The power grab occurred in the wake of youth-led protests that had successfully forced out the previous head of state.

Explaining his choice of Rajaonarivelo for the critical role, President Randrianirina highlighted the new Prime Minister’s background and connections, specifically citing his experience and “connections with the international organizations that work with us.” This emphasis suggests the new administration is prioritizing the establishment of legitimacy and securing cooperation from global bodies following the unconstitutional transfer of power.

The swearing-in of Colonel Randrianirina and the naming of the cabinet followed a dramatic week where lawmakers impeached the former leader, Andry Rajoelina, after he fled abroad last weekend amid rising tensions.

Despite the rapid consolidation of power by the military, ex-leader Rajoelina has unequivocally condemned the army takeover. While remaining in exile, he has publicly refused to step down, maintaining his claim to the presidency.

However, the military’s action appears to have quickly achieved a degree of internal and legal support. The High Constitutional Court ratified the takeover just hours after it occurred, and reports indicate that several security forces have defected, further weakening Rajoelina’s position and bolstering the new administration’s authority.
