A community is in mourning after a young couple was tragically gunned down outside an apartment complex late Monday evening. The double homicide, which claimed the lives of a father of five and his pregnant partner, reportedly stemmed from a mundane neighbourly request to lower the volume of loud music.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on 9 March 2026, officers from the Milwaukee Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of North Teutonia Avenue and West Green Tree Road. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered two adults lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as 33-year-old Giovonni McVicker and 31-year-old Mya Tolbert.

According to distraught relatives, the violence erupted after Mr McVicker approached a neighbour to ask that his music be turned down so his children could sleep ahead of the school day. This request reportedly ignited a heated verbal altercation that rapidly escalated into a fatal shooting in the street outside the residence.

An eyewitness to the tragedy recounted a harrowing scene, stating he heard the initial discharge of a firearm shortly before 10:30 p.m. Upon looking out of his window, the witness reportedly observed a suspect firing repeatedly at both victims, moving between them in a calculated manner before returning to discharge further rounds into Mr McVicker. By the time the witness reached the street, the couple had already succumbed to their injuries.

The killings have left a profound void in the lives of the couple’s surviving children. Ms Tolbert was seven months pregnant at the time of her death; the couple had been eagerly preparing to welcome their third child together in May. Mr McVicker, a local entrepreneur, was a father of five and had been looking forward to his sixth child.

Family members described Mr McVicker as a pillar of the family and a burgeoning businessman who had intended to purchase his first home later this year. “It was senseless,” one relative remarked, struggling to reconcile the loss with the trivial nature of the initial confrontation.

Authorities confirmed that a 27-year-old male was apprehended at the scene in connection with the shooting. While the suspect’s identity has not yet been formally released, the Milwaukee Police Department has referred the case to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Potential charges are currently pending as investigators continue to process evidence and interview witnesses. The investigation remains active.
