A high-level Ethiopian defence delegation has held bilateral consultations with senior United States defence officials, with both sides agreeing to elevate military and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries to a new and advanced level.
The delegation, led by Major General Teshome Gemechu, Director-General of Foreign Relations and Military Cooperation at Ethiopia’s Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Ministry of Defence, visited the United States from 19 to 20 August 2026.
The consultations were held at the Pentagon with senior officials of the US Department of War and were co-led by Brian J. Ellis, Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for African Affairs.
According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions culminated in an agreement to deepen the comprehensive and strategic partnership between Ethiopia and the United States, with emphasis on protecting national interests and promoting mutual benefits.
The two sides agreed that the partnership would be anchored on key pillars designed to strengthen mutual trust and establish sustainable and lasting cooperation between the two countries.
They also expressed a shared commitment to enhancing joint efforts towards promoting lasting peace, security and stability in the Horn of Africa and the wider region.
The consultations further provided an opportunity for the Ethiopian delegation to engage extensively with other senior leaders of US defence institutions. During the visit, the delegation also undertook visits to relevant US defence establishments.
The latest engagement underscores the importance both countries attach to strengthening bilateral defence and diplomatic relations, while advancing shared interests in regional peace, security and stability.
The consultations are expected to provide a renewed framework for closer cooperation between Ethiopia and the United States in defence, diplomacy and broader regional security matters.
