A targeted explosive attack on a Jewish school in Amsterdam early Saturday morning has sparked national outrage, with city officials denouncing the act as a “cowardly” manifestation of rising antisemitism in the Netherlands.

The blast occurred along the exterior wall of a school in the Buitenveldert district. While the Amsterdam Mayor, Femke Halsema, confirmed that the facility sustained only limited damage and no injuries were reported, the psychological impact on the local community has been profound.

In a sternly worded statement, Mayor Halsema described the incident as an explicit assault on the Jewish community’s right to safety. “This is a cowardly act of aggression,” the Mayor said. “A school must be a place where children can receive lessons safely. Amsterdam must be a place where Jews can live safely.”

Acknowledging the palpable “fear and anger” amongst Jewish Amsterdammers, she added that the community is increasingly being confronted with unacceptable levels of antisemitic sentiment. Local police have launched a comprehensive investigation and are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify a suspect seen detonating the device.

The explosion marks the second attack on a Jewish institution in the country in less than forty-eight hours. Early Friday morning, a synagogue in Rotterdam was targeted in a similar fashion, resulting in an explosion and a fire. Fortunately, the blaze extinguished itself, and no casualties were recorded.

The Rotterdam Police Department has since made significant progress in their investigation. Following the Friday attack, officers intercepted a vehicle outside another synagogue in the city after the driver was observed operating the car erratically. The individual reportedly matched the description of a perpetrator involved in the initial synagogue bombing.

Four suspects, all male and aged between 17 and 19, were subsequently arrested. Authorities confirmed the youths are residents of Tilburg and remain in custody pending further inquiries into their alleged involvement in the Rotterdam attack.

National security agencies and local police have reportedly heightened surveillance around Jewish schools, places of worship, and community centres across the Netherlands as the investigation into both incidents continues.
