The African Union Commission (AUC) has formally announced the death of the former President of Algeria, Liamine Zeroual. The news of his passing on Thursday evening was confirmed by the AUC Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, in a poignant statement released via the Union’s official correspondence channels.

Chairperson Youssouf expressed deep sorrow regarding the loss, extending his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Algeria, as well as to the bereaved family of the late President. He further affirmed the AU Commission’s full solidarity with the North African nation during this period of national mourning.

In his tribute, the AUC Chairperson characterised Mr Zeroual as a “steadfast statesman whose life was defined by sacrifice, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and unity of Algeria.”

Mr Zeroual’s tenure coincided with an exceptionally critical juncture in Algeria’s history. The Chairperson noted that his leadership during this period reflected remarkable courage, strategic restraint, and a profound sense of responsibility toward his compatriots. His efforts were instrumental in navigating the complex challenges that faced the nation during his presidency.

The announcement also served to highlight Algeria’s enduring role as a cornerstone of Pan-Africanism. Chairperson Youssouf lauded the nation as a champion of continental solidarity, liberation, and the principle of self-determination ideals that Mr Zeroual consistently upheld on the international stage.

“In honouring his memory, the AUC Chairperson recalls the late Zeroual’s dedication to peace, stability, and national reconciliation,” the statement added. These values were noted to resonate deeply with the African Union’s overarching vision of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa.

The statement concluded with a solemn benediction: “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

As the continent reflects on his contributions, Mr Zeroual is remembered as a leader who prioritised national stability and the collective interests of the African Union above all else.
