Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has jokingly told the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, that he had defeated his political camp following the victory of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, in the August 15 governorship election.

Davido made the remark on Thursday during a meeting between Governor Adeleke and Wike in Abuja, shortly after the Osun governor had met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

In a video of the encounter, Davido could be heard telling Wike, “I beat you guys. I beat APC.”

Wike immediately challenged the singer, asking whether Davido had personally defeated him in the election.

The exchange appeared to be in a light-hearted mood, with Davido subsequently conceding the point. He later prostrated before Wike while laughing, after which the two men exchanged hugs.

Wike was also heard saying, “You dey hear am,” as the playful exchange continued.

The meeting took place as Governor Adeleke continued engagements in Abuja following his re-election as Osun State governor.

A photograph of the meeting, shared on X by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s media aide, showed Adeleke and the FCT minister shaking hands while the governor held his certificate of return.

Olayinka captioned the photograph: “Governor Ademola Adeleke visits the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.”

Adeleke Meets Tinubu

The meeting with Wike came hours after Governor Adeleke visited President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he presented his certificate of return and expressed appreciation for the conduct of the election.

Adeleke arrived at the Villa at about 5:25 p.m. dressed in a navy-blue traditional outfit and was accompanied by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

He was later joined by several members of his team, including the Director-General of his Campaign Council, Senator Lere Oyewumi; a member of the council, Sunday Bisi; his Chief of Staff, Akinleye Kazeem; and Bamidele Salam, representing Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.

The governor won 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11. Accord Party candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.

The election recorded 1,010,684 accredited voters out of 2,339,544 registered voters, while 1,005,800 votes were cast. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared 985,079 votes valid and rejected 20,721 ballots.

Davido’s Political Comments

Davido had closely followed the Osun election and openly commented on developments surrounding the poll and the collation of results.

During the election period, the singer urged his uncle to stop supporting presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election.

“No more supporting any presidential candidate @AAdeleke_01 make we Dey our Dey!!!” Davido wrote in a post that was later deleted.

He was also reported to have deleted another post directed at President Tinubu, in which he wrote: “U no try @officialABAT.”

The posts attracted attention because Governor Adeleke had publicly endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in 2027, despite contesting the Osun governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party.

Following his victory, however, Adeleke maintained his support for Tinubu and praised the President for what he described as his role in ensuring a credible election.

“At this point, I must deeply appreciate Mr President, His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his strong support for a free and fair election,” Adeleke said in his acceptance speech.

“Mr President is a son of Osun State, and I hereby reaffirm my earlier endorsement of him for a second term in the 2027 presidential election,” he added.

Why Adeleke Supports Tinubu

Adeleke later explained that his support for Tinubu was not based on any political agreement between them.

“No, I did not reach an agreement with Mr President,” he said in an interview with Channels Television.

He attributed his support partly to Tinubu’s identity as a Yoruba man and to projects being undertaken by the Federal Government.

“My support is just based on Mr President being a Yoruba man and his projects. And I believe that all the federal roads that he has started, I want to encourage him not to forget Osun too,” Adeleke said.

The governor appealed to Tinubu to extend federal infrastructure projects to Osun, particularly road projects connecting the state with other parts of the country.

“I feel like, since a Yoruba man has won for the first time, maybe I will give him another chance to develop his reforms,” he added.

Adeleke also said he was prepared to work with political actors supporting the President, regardless of their political affiliations.

“As long as they say, ‘I’m doing it for Mr President,’ I don’t mind. I will work with them,” he said.

Despite his support for Tinubu, Adeleke ruled out joining the APC for the time being.

“As I’m talking to you right now, I’m not even thinking about that. It’s not on my agenda,” he said.

EFCC Dispute

Adeleke also linked part of his appreciation for Tinubu to the President’s intervention during a period when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) restricted access to one of the Osun State Government’s accounts.

The EFCC had placed a Post No Debit restriction on the account as part of an investigation into the handling of about N11 billion, including Ecology Funds, intervention funds and allocations received through the Federation Account Allocation Committee.

The commission also alleged that unusual transfers had been made from the account to several corporate accounts.

Following the election, Adeleke said Tinubu personally contacted him and indicated that the matter had been resolved.

“What else do I want? I’ve instructed my Attorney General to drop it. Mr President has done well; he called me. What more do I want?” Adeleke said.

The light-hearted exchange between Davido and Wike has since drawn attention on social media, coming against the backdrop of the political rivalry surrounding the Osun election and the broader political alignments already emerging ahead of the 2027 general elections.
