The Rivers State University, RSU, has matriculated the first set of medical students for the college of medical sciences.
This feat was made known by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Blessing C. Didia during the 36th matriculation ceremony of the university on Wednesday.
Commending the State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, for establishing the Medical college, he revealed that the university matriculated 3795 students out of 17,918 candidates who chose the university as first choice.
Didia stated that the institution’s global setting include institution’s cut-off marks, programme cut-off marks and programme quota in relation with merit, catchment area, etc.
Reiterating that for the institution to actualise admission there are three levels or processes for the machine to accept the proposals. The first according to him, was after the consideration by the admission committee, the Director (Admissions) will propose admissions to the VC, at the second, the VC recommends the admissions to the JAMB, at the final stage, the JAMB approves or disapproves the admissions. After which the prospective candidates will be communicated directly through their e-mail addresses by JAMB.
He said the institution is moving from the traditional award of paper degrees to seriously pursue an entrepreneurial institution and urged the matriculating students to see Entrepreneurship as an important aspect of their studies, irrespective of their course of study.
Noting that the intention of the institution is to produce graduates who will be self-employed or employers of labour and not seekers of employment. Disclosing that The university is already building a befitting complex as entrepreneurial development centre to accommodate workshops, laboratories and demonstration classrooms, through the intervention of Tetfund.
He stated that students can achieve their goals through the power of imagination and creativity and encouraged them to imbibe the spirit of entrepreneurship in order to enjoy its accompanied benefits.
Professor Didia emphasised that his administration is out to fight illicit practices and corruption. He assured that his office was open to students and encouraged them to report any staff who collects money from them for admissions.
