The Rivers State Ministry of Education says over 1,800 schools across the 23 Local Government Areas, will be shutdown for operating illegally.
The Commissioner for Education, Â Prof. Kaniye Ebeku gave the hint in Port Harcourt ” The governor is unhappy and the ministry is working on the directives of the governor.
“To have a situation where many organizations and individuals are operating underground, Â outside the law that regulates the operations of private schools.
“And so, he is not pleased to have a situation where in a state, Â where he is governor, Â you allow a situation where a large number of unapproved schools are operating.
“Secondly,  even assuming without conceding that they have the capacity to deliver quality education,  the law requires that to operate  a private school, you must pay appropriate taxes. Undocumented schools, unapproved schools are not known to the tax authority and so they are robbing the state of revenue” he stated.
