The Rivers State Ministry of Education says over 1,800 schools across the 23 Local Government Areas, will be shutdown for operating illegally.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku gave the hint in Port Harcourt ” The governor is unhappy and the ministry is working on the directives of the governor.
“To have a situation where many organizations and individuals are operating underground, outside the law that regulates the operations of private schools.
“And so, he is not pleased to have a situation where in a state, where he is governor, you allow a situation where a large number of unapproved schools are operating.
“Secondly, even assuming without conceding that they have the capacity to deliver quality education, the law requires that to operate a private school, you must pay appropriate taxes. Undocumented schools, unapproved schools are not known to the tax authority and so they are robbing the state of revenue” he stated.
