ABUJA, FCT – July 30, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the appointment of the Pro-Chancellor, governing council members, and principal officers for the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, in Rivers State. This crucial step paves the way for the institution to admit its first cohort of students in September 2025, just months after President Tinubu signed its enabling bill into law on February 3, 2025, Africa Update reports.
Leading the institution’s governing body is Professor Don Mon Baridam, appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. Professor Baridam, a distinguished Professor of Management specializing in Organisational Behaviour, hails from the South-South geopolitical zone and previously lectured at the University of Port Harcourt.
According to a press statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Professor Chinedu Mmom, also from the South-South, has been named the pioneering Vice-Chancellor. Professor Mmom is a respected figure in academia, currently a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt, and a former Commissioner for Education in Rivers State.
The Governing Council itself comprises a diverse and experienced team, drawing members from across Nigeria to ensure broad representation and expertise. These include:
- Mr. Emmanuel Onoja (North Central)
- Mr. Hamid Adekunle (South West)
- Professor Chima Oji (South East)
- Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Lamda (North West)
Further solidifying the university’s administrative framework, President Tinubu appointed a team of professionals to key principal roles:
- Dr. Mpigi Monday Douglas (South-South) will serve as the Registrar.
- Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (North Central) takes on the role of Bursar.
- Dr. Saghanen Ntogo G. B. (South-South) has been appointed as the Librarian.
This landmark establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni signifies a major commitment to higher education and environmental studies in the region, promising to foster local development and address critical environmental challenges.
