The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has suspended all remaining Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week activities following reports of a security incident on the campus.
The university, in a statement signed by its Registrar, Dr Chinonye Abraham Ajie, directed students to return to classes on Thursday, 13 August 2026, for normal academic activities.
The development followed reports that a male 100-level student of the Faculty of Education was allegedly shot during an incident on the campus.
In its statement, however, the university management did not disclose the specific circumstances that prompted the suspension of the remaining SUG Week activities.
The statement read: “This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.
“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday August 13th, 2026 for normal academic activities. Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.
“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”
The suspension comes amid conflicting accounts regarding an alleged security incident during the ongoing Students’ Week activities.
Earlier, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, issued a statement addressing reports of an alleged cult clash on the campus.
According to Okiridu, security personnel, particularly the Police, had been deployed during the Students’ Week activities on Monday, 10 August, to maintain crowd control and ensure the safety of students.
She explained that the deployment was part of the university’s standard security arrangements during large gatherings, given the history of hoodlums attempting to exploit such occasions to cause violence and attacks.
Okiridu said order was maintained throughout the day and stressed that firearms were considered only as a last resort where the lives of students were assessed to be at risk.
She further stated that no casualties were recorded and that no student or other person was killed or injured during the activities.
“There was also no cult clash or related activity,” the statement added.
The university’s latest decision to suspend the remaining SUG Week activities has nevertheless heightened concerns among students and members of the university community, particularly following the reports of an alleged shooting on campus.
The management has urged students to return to their academic activities and warned them against actions capable of undermining their studies or disturbing peace on the university premises.
