PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – July 10, 2025 – The Rivers State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation into a devastating fire incident at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt, which tragically claimed the life of Saint Sunny Amadi, 32.
According to a statement from the State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, Amadi was allegedly set ablaze by his girlfriend, Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student at the University of Port Harcourt.
Iringe-Koko explained that Amadi suffered severe burns and was immediately rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Despite medical efforts, he sadly succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
“Upon receiving the report at about 11:12 a.m., police detectives from Choba Division promptly visited the scene and the victim at the hospital, who was in critical condition,” Iringe-Koko stated. “Unfortunately, the victim later succumbed to injuries and died while on admission.”
Cynthia Chukwundah, who is reportedly heavily pregnant with Amadi’s child, also sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention. Due to her medical condition, she has been unable to provide a full account of the events leading to the fire. Police anticipate she will give her statement once her condition stabilizes. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has appealed to the public to remain calm and peaceful. He assured the community that a thorough investigation is underway and that justice will be served as the details of the incident unfold.
