The peaceful community of Amaji village in Umuoyoro, Omuma Local Government Area, has been plunged into a state of profound grief and pandemonium following the brutal killing of a mother of two.

The suspect, identified as a Mr Alachi, is currently in the custody of the Eberi Police Division under the Oyigbo Area Command. He stands accused of the murder of his wife, whose throat was allegedly slit during a domestic dispute on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

According to local sources, the harrowing incident unfolded while the couple were tending to their farm in Amaji. It is reported that a “minor argument” escalated rapidly, during which the suspect allegedly produced a kitchen knife and attacked his spouse.

The victim’s screams alerted nearby villagers and farmers, who rushed to the scene. The witnesses managed to overpower Mr Alachi and detained him until he could be handed over to the authorities at the Eberi Police Division.

In an official statement, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Grace Iringe Koko, confirmed the arrest.

“I can confirm the incident,” CSP Koko stated. “The suspect has been arrested, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter with a view to ensuring timely justice.”

Security sources revealed that during initial police interrogations, the suspect claimed a loss of self-control, reportedly stating that he “does not know what came over him” at the moment the crime was committed.

The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from civil society. Prince Wiro, a noted human rights advocate and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign, described the act as “the height of man’s inhumanity to man.”

Mr Wiro emphasised that there is no possible justification for such violence and urged the police to remain thorough in their pursuit of the truth to ensure that the law is upheld.

The Umuoyoro community remains in shock as they mourn the loss of a young mother, while the suspect awaits formal charges in court.
