Thugs on Monday morning attacked the Benin prison also known as White House, on Sapele Road in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Africa Update gathered that the armed thugs had hijacked an #EndSARS protest against police brutality and extrajudicial killings.
Though, the hoodlums were engaged by the armed prison warders, some of the prisoners still escaped while several others sustained injuries. There are however, no casualty figures at the time of filing this report. It is also unconfirmed if any of those who escaped have been arrested.
The hoodlums who reportedly started gathering along Sapele Road beside the prison as early as 7am, set bonfires which caused some apprehension among road users. They were said to have vandalised the Magistrate Court 4 which is beside the prison.
