The Rivers State Police Command has issued a stern warning to the public following a surge in reports of criminals masquerading as police officers to extort unsuspecting residents.
The Command noted with “deep concern” a disturbing trend involving groups of individuals dressed in black attire who pose as law enforcement agents. These impostors have reportedly been targeting citizens for financial exploitation, often under the guise of official duty.
In response to these developments, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adewole Adepoju, psc, mni, has deployed a “robust mechanism” to monitor and apprehend the perpetrators. The Command has vowed to prosecute any individuals found participating in these illicit acts to the full extent of the law.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, clarified the boundaries of legitimate police conduct in a statement released on Friday, 30 January 2026. The Command explicitly reminded citizens of their rights regarding roadside searches and financial demands.
“It is imperative to note that no individual, regardless of their claimed affiliation, has the authority to conduct searches of personal devices, such as phones or laptops, on the road or at checkpoints,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the Police warned that officers are strictly prohibited from:
Demanding the search of digital devices (phones or laptops) during routine stops. Coercing citizens to withdraw cash from Point of Sale (POS) operators, and Forcing individuals to transfer funds at financial institutions or checkpoints.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to treat “hostile” or irregular checkpoints with suspicion. To aid in the eradication of these rogue elements, the Command has released several direct hotlines for immediate reporting.
Citizens may reach the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) at 07057605256, 08120822987, or 09035774814. For direct contact with the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the public should call 09014273818, while the Emergency Control Room can be reached at 08032003514.
The Rivers State Police Command has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding law and order across the state. While legitimate operations continue to ensure the safety of all residents, the Command appealed for the continued cooperation of the public in identifying those who seek to undermine the integrity of the force.
