PORT-HARCOURT – Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have successfully tracked down and arrested a suspect linked to a viral social media video depicting a brutal assault, four months after the incident initially sparked public outcry. The arrest comes following a diligent, intelligence-led investigation prompted by the distressing footage.
The suspect, identified as Abi Baragon, a 46-year-old male, was apprehended on October 13, 2025, in connection with the crime of Assault Occasioning Harm, which was allegedly captured on video on June 20, 2025.
Alleged Motive and Police Action
The investigation, spearheaded by the Operatives attached to the Human Rights Department at the State Headquarters on Moscow Road, Port-Harcourt, utilized technical support to identify and locate the alleged assailant who had initially fled the scene.
Sources within the command indicate that the alleged motive for the attack was the victim’s rejection of the suspect’s marriage overtures. This rejection reportedly occurred after the victim discovered that Mr. Baragon was already married with four childre an allegation concerning his marital status that the suspect has denied.
During intense interrogation, the suspect made a voluntary and chilling confession, admitting that he assaulted the victim using bottles and stabbing her during the altercation.
Commitment to Justice
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital, while Mr. Baragon remains in Police custody pending formal charges. The Rivers State Police Command has launched an in-depth investigation to fully unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident before the case goes to trial.
The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju psc, mnips, commended the swift action of his Operatives and expressed appreciation for the public’s crucial role in sharing credible information that led to the arrest.
The Police Command reiterated its unwavering commitment to ensuring justice, issuing a stern warning to criminals: “If anyone commit a crime and run away, the Police will catch up on you. The suspect will face prosecution upon conclusion of a discreet investigation.”
