The Rivers State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing an alleged shooting involving a police officer and a motorist, which reportedly resulted in the death of an occupant and injuries to two other passers-by.

The Command, in a statement issued on Friday by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, said its attention had been drawn to the video circulating on social media concerning the incident.

According to the police, preliminary information indicated that the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, following an altercation between the occupant of the vehicle, identified as Anthony Obodo, and a police officer, CPL Alfred Louis.

The Command said the altercation reportedly escalated into a physical scuffle between the two men, during which a gun was fired, resulting in Obodo’s death and injuries to two other passers-by.

The circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm and the events leading to the death remain subject to investigation.

Following the incident, the police said the alleged officer CPL Alfred Louis was attacked and assaulted by an angry mob, during which he sustained multiple injuries.

The Command further disclosed that the officer and members of his team were currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they would face appropriate disciplinary procedures in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigation.

The Rivers State Police Command condemned the alleged conduct of the officer, stressing that such action was inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The action is totally condemnable and does not reflect professionalism in policing,” the Command said, adding that it would not relent in taking strict disciplinary measures against police officers found to have violated the law or professional standards.

The Command also stressed that it would not protect officers involved in unethical conduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.

“The Rivers State Police Command is not a shield for anybody engaging in unethical conduct putting the Nigeria Police Force in disrepute,” it stated.

The Command assured members of the public that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings.

The incident has generated considerable attention on social media, with calls for transparency and accountability in the handling of allegations involving the use of firearms by security personnel.

The police urged members of the public to contact its emergency and complaint channels when faced with incidents requiring urgent intervention or when reporting misconduct.

The Complaint Response Unit (CRU) can be reached on 07057605209, 07057605256, 08120822987 and 07072323049, while the Police Control Room can be contacted on 08032003514.

The statement was signed by ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, ANIPR, Esq., Police Public Relations Officer, for the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Police Command, and dated August 28, 2026.
