Prison break: Over 1,500 inmates escape after gunmen storm prison

On Monday morning daredevil gunmen attacked the Owerri Correctional Prison in the Imo State capital and freed over 1500 inmates, according to reports. The attackers also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.

During the operation that lasted over two hours, the gunmen further freed the suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command. Africa Update gathered that the gunmen operated from 1am till 3am on Monday. An eyewitness disclosed that the gunmen sang solidarity songs for about 30 minutes, at the Government House Roundabout before attacking the facilities.

On breaking into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, the attackers told the inmates to go home. When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks.
