Police Inspector, brother arrested for stealing corpse

A serving Police Inspector, identified as Insp. Ogbu Clement, along with his elder brother, Isawa Ogbu, have been taken into custody for allegedly leading a group of over 50 youths in the forceful seizure of a corpse and a subsequent violent attack on residents in the Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The shocking incident was officially reported to the Otukpo Police Division by Dr. Pius Onwe Odengle, a staff member at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

According to Dr. Odengle’s statement, the initial incident occurred on Thursday, November 28, 2025, at approximately 11:00 a.m. He was transporting the body of his late mother, Mama Lucy Inogwanya, from Makurdi to Ogyoma Village for her burial rites.

The complainant alleged that upon reaching the Ogyoma Village junction, Insp. Ogbu Clement, who is attached to the Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, along with over 50 youths from Adim Village, blocked the road. The group reportedly vandalized a Benue State Civil Protection Guard vehicle, forcefully seized the deceased’s body, and unilaterally buried it in Adim Village, asserting that the deceased was his aunt.

Sources further revealed that the conflict escalated on the subsequent Saturday morning. At about 9:30 a.m., the Inspector and his brother allegedly mobilized youths once again and returned to Ogyoma Village, where they carried out a destructive attack.

The mob reportedly destroyed over 500 plastic chairs, broke windows and doors, and inflicted injuries on several residents before security forces intervened.

Police authorities confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer in Otukpo promptly dispatched patrol units, supported by personnel from Operation Whirl Stroke, NSCDC Agro-Rangers, and the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, to the scene to halt the violence.

Photographs of the incident were taken, and the injured victims were rushed to hospitals for necessary medical attention.

The police confirmed that both Insp. Ogbu Clement and his elder brother, Isawa Ogbu, are currently in custody. Further investigations into the serious allegations of misconduct, forceful seizure, and assault are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the violent disputes.
