Port Harcourt, Rivers State — A profound state of tension has gripped the Rumuji Community in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State following a violent dispute over youth leadership that resulted in one fatality and the dramatic burning of the community’s traditional ruler’s palace.
The crisis, which rapidly escalated into deadly communal conflict, reportedly erupted during a meeting convened by a company operating in the area, specifically to discuss the imminent activation of a mini-power generating plant built for the community.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the confrontation began when the Emohua LGA Chairman, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, allegedly introduced a new youth president, a move that directly contravened the authority of the currently serving incumbent, Mr. Anele Ogbu.
The unexpected announcement provoked a heated argument among rival youth factions present. The verbal exchange quickly turned fatal, leading to the stabbing of Mr. Paul Oduveh, a known supporter of Mr. Ogbu. Mr. Oduveh was rushed immediately for medical attention but regrettably died en route to the hospital.
In swift and violent retaliation, grieving youths reportedly set fire to the palace of the community’s traditional ruler, Eze Christian, in a devastating act that further inflamed an already volatile situation.
The incident has resulted in sustained instability, with reports indicating ongoing clashes between the rival groups across the community.
Reacting to the upheaval, the incumbent youth leader, Anele Ogbu, issued a grave warning while levelling accusations against his adversaries. Mr. Ogbu claimed he and his property had been attacked and destroyed by masked assailants, whom he alleged were backed by certain community figures and local vigilante personnel.
Appealing for immediate government and security intervention, Mr. Ogbu expressed deep concern over what he termed political interference in the internal affairs of the youth leadership structure.
“If nothing is done, more youths may lose their lives,” Mr. Ogbu cautioned, underscoring the necessity of urgent action to stabilise the community and prevent further tragedy.
