PDP chieftain dies in Police custody

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State, Lucky Ayomanor is confirmed to have died in police custody.

The incident happened in Sapele Police Station, Sapele Local Government Area, LGA, of the State.

Ayomanor was a former Director of the Delta State Direct Labour Agency, DLA.

He died yesterday after he was arrested for alleged being in possession of unlicensed firearm.

According to SaharaReporters, Ayomanor was stopped by policemen on “stop and search” duty along Gana Road in Sapele while on his way to visit an elder brother.

After a search on his Sports Utility Vehicle, the police allegedly recovered a fully loaded pump action rifle.

The policemen were said to have immediately arrested him because he could not produce a license for the gun.

It was learnt that Ayomanor fainted as he was being taken to the police station and the policemen attempted to take him to a hospital, but he died on the way.

However, a brother to the deceased, Michael Okor, described the claim of the police that a gun was found in Ayomanor’s car as fabricated.

According to him, “The Police are only lying to cover up what actually transpired. People who knew my brother can attest to his peaceful nature.

“My brother was a peace-loving man. What would he be doing with a pump action gun and fully loaded one for that matter?”

The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Andrew Aniamaka, has confirmed Ayomanor’s death and the detention of the four mobile police.

He, however, insisted that the politician was arrested because he had a loaded pump-action gun in his car.

He said, “After his arrest, he developed a strange illness while being taken to the station and died on his way to the hospital.”
