Ogidi, Nigeria — A solemn funeral ceremony in Ezi Village, Ogidi, spiraled into a scene of unspeakable violence on Thursday as gunmen stormed the event, killing four people and injuring at least 15 others. The Anambra State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the attack, which officials believe to be a cult-related clash.
According to Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, officers from the Ogidi Division responded to a distress call, restoring order and recovering 16 expended cartridges from the scene. The injured were swiftly evacuated for treatment.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, assuring residents of the police’s commitment to “rid the state of cult-related violence.” The Anambra State Government also denounced the bloodshed, with Information Commissioner Law Mefor stressing that the violence was not targeted at any ethnic group.
The shooting has heightened tensions in the area, coming barely two months after a similar attack killed 13 people in the Ogboji community. Residents are now demanding decisive action from security agencies to combat the recurring gun violence that has plagued their communities.
