Lagos, Nigeria – An accountant, Oguibe Promise Nwachukwu, has been ordered to be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos by Justice Rahmon Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court, following allegations that he stole and converted approximately ₦200 million belonging to his former employer, Travelstar Web Logistics Limited.
The development was disclosed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an official statement released on Monday.
Nwachukwu, alongside his company, Wifamapp Royalty Global Limited, was arraigned on a 13-count charge bordering on stealing, criminal breach of trust, and conversion of company funds.
According to the anti-graft agency, the defendant dishonestly converted the funds for his personal use over a two-year period, specifically between 2018 and 2020.
The charge sheet details multiple instances of alleged financial misconduct. In one specific count, the EFCC accused Nwachukwu of converting $36,000 (approximately ₦54 million) entrusted to him as the company’s accountant in March 2020. A separate count alleged a similar scheme between January and July 2018, where he was accused of converting $156,000 (about ₦234 million) belonging to the same firm.
The EFCC’s statement partly read: “That you, Oguibe Promise Nwachukwu, being the alter ego of Wifamapp Royalty Global Limited, sometime in March 2020 in Lagos, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of $36,000, property of Travelstar Web Logistics Limited, entrusted to you as its accountant, thereby committing an offence of stealing contrary to Section 280(1)(b) and (2)(f) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
When the 13 charges were read out in court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all counts.
Following his plea, the EFCC counsel, A.A. Usman, prayed the court for a trial date and sought to have the defendant remanded in the EFCC’s custody. However, the defence counsel, Kelvin C. Uzozie, informed the court that a bail application had been filed, requesting that his client remain in EFCC custody pending the hearing.
After considering the submissions from both parties, Justice Oshodi ruled that the defendant be immediately remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.
“The defendant shall remain in custody until the bail hearing is decided,” the judge ruled. The case was subsequently adjourned to October 17, 2025, for the hearing and determination of the bail application.
