Before the emergence of the present administration, politics in Bayelsa State was characterized by blackmail, witch-hunt, antagonism, violence, and sidelining.
Party primaries and other major activities were mere formalities. They were often concluded inside the government house.
Party faithful and other observers were never given any sense of belonging. The feeling of party activities was very low.
The above led to political apathy even within the political parties because the vast majority of members were never given any sense of belonging.
There were cases where party members and even leaders who feel disgruntled were beaten up instead of appeasing them.
But Gov. Douye Diri, who is a trained political scientist and a political engineer, sees things differently. He sees politics as a tool for social mobilization, social inclusion, and social change.
As a proponent of social mobilization, he believes in consensus building. He knows the efficacy of teamwork and as a proponent of social change, he believes so much in development.
Bayelsa State was hitherto divided by party lines. It was an exceptional extreme case. At a time, spouses, siblings, parents, children and associates who subscribed to different political camps were used against each other. It was the case of divide and rule.
Businesses of members of opposition and perceived enemies were grounded. Members of opposition were attacked on several occasions. Members of opposition even slept with one eye opened for fear of the unknown.
The political atmosphere in Bayelsa State was always charged and tense. It was always filled with so many uncertainties.
But all that is now in the past. Politics in the state is now devoid of violence, blackmail, antagonism, and exclusion. The interest of all parties is respected.
The above positive development has not only brought about peace and unity, but it has given all sections a high sense of belonging. This is one of the secrets behind the rapid socio-economic growth and development of Bayelsa State under the stewardship of Senator Douye Diri, our God-sent Miracle and Prosperity Governor.
Some states in the federation are beginning to learn and adopt the political strategy of Gov. Douye Diri.
Under Gov. Douye Diri, Bayelsa State is emerging first position in most areas, including prudence in government expenditure, infrastructure, sports, and security.
I therefore join other well-meaning Bayelsans to pray that Almighty God will continue to watch over Senator Douye Diri and his entire household.
