The Senate Adhoc Committee on Oil Theft has arrived in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, to investigate the true state of affairs at oil facilities across the Niger Delta.
This was due to the region’s declining oil revenue as a result of crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
The Ad hoc Committee, led by its Chairman, Mr Bassey Akpan will travel to Niger Delta oil platforms with officials from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
Addressing the journalists at the Port Harcourt International Airport, the Senate Committee Chairman, Mr Bassey Akpan, said the Committee is out to ascertain the reason for the shut ins in Nigeria’s oil production and ensure that oil producers adhere strictly to the industry’s regulations on metering.
Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria had staged a nationwide protest demanding action from the government and stakeholders in response to the economic devastation caused by oil theft.
