During a facility tour to assess the extent of the damage, NOSDRA Director-General Chukwuemeka Woke called for immediate action to repair the leaking well-head and prevent further environmental disasters.
The incident, which occurred on January 1, 2025, involved a gas leak from OML Well 8, operated by NNPCL. Local sources suspect that the incident may have been triggered by an attempted illegal tapping of the well-head by suspected pipeline vandals.
The gas leak resulted in a fire that has significantly impacted the surrounding environment, prompting concerns from local residents.
During the visit, the DG emphasized the agency’s collaborative efforts with stakeholders and the operator to extinguish the fire and mitigate its impact on the community. He also announced plans to provide relief materials to affected residents.
Woke stressed the importance of continuous surveillance of operational areas by NNPCL to prevent future occurrences. He assured the public that NOSDRA would thoroughly analyze the data collected during the tour and work closely with stakeholders to bring the situation under control, while prioritizing the welfare of the affected communities.
