Nigeria has lost a towering figure in its financial and telecommunications sectors with the passing of Pascal Dozie at the age of 85. A family statement released by his son, Uzoma Dozie, confirmed his death on April 8th, describing him as a devoted family man and a man of deep Catholic faith. The statement conveyed both sorrow and gratitude for his impactful life dedicated to God, family, and Nigeria.
Mr. Dozie’s most significant contribution was the establishment of Diamond Bank in 1990. Under his leadership, the bank became known for its innovation and played a crucial role in Nigeria’s financial landscape until its merger with Access Bank in 2019. He later entrusted the bank’s leadership to his son, Uzoma, who served as CEO until the consolidation.
Beyond finance, Pascal Dozie was a pivotal force in the development of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. As the pioneering chairman of MTN Nigeria, he expertly guided the company through its formative years following the liberalization of the sector in the early 2000s. His visionary leadership saw MTN experience rapid growth, becoming Nigeria’s largest mobile network and a symbol of the nation’s digital advancement.
Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Mr. Dozie’s pursuit of knowledge led him from Our Lady’s School in Emekuku to the London School of Economics, where he earned an economics degree. He furthered his education with a master’s degree in administrative science from City University, London.
Throughout his distinguished career, Pascal Dozie was widely admired for his humility, long-term perspective, and unwavering integrity. His significant contributions to Nigeria earned him national recognition, including the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
