Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has officially handed over an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force, emphasising that the donation is a strategic security initiative devoid of political motivation.
During the handover ceremony at the 115 Special Operations Group of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Rumuomasi, Governor Fubara articulated that the provision of the helicopter is aimed at fortifying security operations, enhancing aerial surveillance, and improving rapid response capabilities within Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.
He explained that the AW139 helicopter, previously embroiled in a contractual dispute with Aero Contractors, was readily made available upon the Chief of the Air Staff’s request for security operations. “The State Executive Council deliberated on it and agreed that ensuring the success of the Air Force’s operations is in our best interest,” he affirmed.
Governor Fubara underscored that the donation signifies his administration’s dedication to national security and economic stability. “This is not politics. We did not ask for anything in return. Our only request is that this asset be used effectively to secure lives, national assets, and major operations in Rivers State and the Niger Delta,” he reiterated.
Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, expressed gratitude for the Rivers State Government’s support, acknowledging the helicopter as a pivotal asset in enhancing national security. He noted that the AW139’s advanced capabilities would significantly enhance tactical airlift, search and rescue operations, and disaster relief efforts.
Air Vice Marshal E.O.E. Ebiowei, Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, also commended the ongoing collaboration between the Rivers State Government and the Air Force, particularly in providing essential logistical support.
The handover was formalised with the signing of official documents by Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Secretary to the Rivers State Government, and Air Commodore Haliru Badamasi, Director of Works, Nigerian Air Force.
