The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reacted to the decision of its governorship aspirant in the party’s May 2026 primary election, Dr Sokonte Davies, to align with the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Davies reportedly met with Wike in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, where he announced his decision to join the coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has prompted a pointed response from the Rivers ADC, which said Davies’ decision appeared to have been driven by disappointment over his failure to secure the party’s governorship ticket.
In a statement reacting to the development, the party said Davies’ “disappointment has now taken him on an interesting political journey, from seeking the ticket of a political party to joining a coalition that has no governorship ticket to give him.”
The ADC added: “We confess that we are struggling to follow the mathematics.”
According to the party, if Davies’ grievance was his inability to secure the ADC governorship ticket, his decision to join a coalition without a governorship ticket appeared difficult to reconcile.
“If the grievance was about not getting a governorship ticket in the ADC, one would have expected the next destination to be somewhere a governorship ticket was actually available,” the party said.
Despite its criticism, the ADC acknowledged Davies’ right to determine his political future. “Politics is a matter of choice, and Davies is entitled to make his,” the party said.
The ADC, however, added a sarcastic note, expressing hope that Davies would find the political fulfilment he was seeking.
“We only hope that when the excitement of the new photographs and handshakes settles, he finds whatever political fulfilment he could not find after the ADC primary,” the party said.
Davies’ decision to align with Wike’s Rainbow Coalition adds another dimension to the evolving political realignments in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians and political groups increasingly repositioning themselves ahead of the contest.
