A 17-year-old boy was allegedly murdered by a gang in India, who removed his testicles after being led to believe that the organs could fetch almost £100,000 on the black market, police have said.
The teenager, identified only as Rehan, was reportedly lured to a secluded location before being stabbed to death by members of the gang. Investigators said the suspects were motivated by a false claim circulated in a social media video that human testicles could command a huge price on the international black market.
Police in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, said the suspects allegedly preserved the teenager’s testicles in ice while attempting to find a buyer willing to pay about 12 million Indian rupees, equivalent to approximately £92,465.
The police have arrested the alleged mastermind, 20-year-old business student Zoheb Khan, and his alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Aamir Qureshi. Three minors have also been detained in connection with the killing.
According to investigators, Khan recruited the group and convinced them that human testicles could be sold for a substantial amount in Gulf countries.
Police allege that Khan falsely presented himself as a doctor and claimed to possess the knowledge required to remove the organs. He reportedly purchased a white apron, stethoscope and thermometer online and used the items while training members of the group.
Rehan, who worked as a street vendor, was allegedly lured to the scene of the killing on August 6. Two youths reportedly approached him at his stall and offered him 100 rupees, approximately 77 pence, to assist with an arranged fight.
Ayush Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Bhopal, said four of the accused participated directly in the murder, while Khan allegedly guided them through the operation via a video call.
After the suspects failed to find a buyer for the organs, Khan allegedly instructed them to dispose of them in separate lakes.
Police recovered Rehan’s body from Lower Lake, near Dhobi Ghat, on August 10, four days after he was reportedly killed. His identity was established through a tattoo.
Rehan’s mother had reported him missing five days before his body was identified.
The case has shocked the local community and raised concerns over the potentially dangerous consequences of misinformation and criminal schemes promoted through social media.
Police investigations are continuing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the teenager’s killing and determine the roles played by all those arrested or detained.
