The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given the hint that it will soon commence the distribution of Permanent Voters cards (PVC) to residents of Rivers State.
Speaking to newsmen, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Aniedi Ikoiwa stated that the commission has conclude plans to commence the distribution of PVCs after it was suspended in 2015 due to series of elections in the state.
He said ” we are going to commence our distribution of permanent voters cards. Those cards that were suspended in 2015.
” The reason it has not started in Rivers was because of the series of elections. Because if they were distributed at that time, parties would begin to accuse themselves, INEC and so on of pumping cards to rival parties against one another and so on.
“So we decided to hold a break on that. And now that the elections seem to have gone to atleast beyond 90%, we have now said it will not be fair for us to continue to delay, when other people in other states are collecting their permanent voters card.
“People are doing other corrections which we are supposed to do in the offices to enhance whatsoever the card can provide for people”.
He further stated that for ease of distribution and monitoring purpose, a desk would be created in each local goevrnemt area and urged residents to ensure that their cards are not handed over to proxies.
