The reelection bid of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, is attracting stiff resistance according to information at the disposal of Africa Update. This resistance a source said is to ensure that the 2023 presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar is truncated.

Secondus’, quest for a second term in office has sparked a fresh struggle for the soul of the party by various interest groups, as his current tenure is due to expire in December. But with four months to go, prominent power blocs are said to have begun consultations and meetings on how to ensure that the next NWC of the party is led by their cronies.

There are unconfirmed reports that Secondus’ re-election bid, is allegedly being opposed by some prominent PDP leaders and chieftains, including the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his Sokoto State counterpart, Aminu Tambuwal, who prefer a new person as the national chairman of the party ahead of the 2023 elections.

Sources said opposition to Secondus’ second term may not be unconnected with allegations in some quarters that he favoured, and still favours, the Atiku political camp more than other blocs within the party. Some party chieftains are pushing for Chief Olabode to become National Chairman at all cost, while others are working for the current caretaker committee chairman, of Ekiti State, Senator Hosea Agboola, to replace Secondus.
