N10million Burial Fine: Rivers People cry out

Rivers indegenes who were elated about the news of the possibility of committing the remains of their loved ones to mother earth, following the announcement that burial ceremonies could hold in Rivers State, are now downcast as a result of the catalogue of conditions outlined in the guidelines for burial

A cross section of residents, who spoke with Africa Update expressed shock that a whooping N10million default fee is attached to the guideline, despite economic realities on ground. They noted that the cultural practice of most communities in the state, pose challenges when it comes to number of persons allowed at funeral ceremonies and certain myths some traditions attach to burials done in an unusual way. While commending the State Government in its effort to ensure that COVID-19 is curbed, they urged the Governor, Nyesom Wike, to review that clause, to enable families bury their dead relatives.
