Cultists behind gruesome killing of UNIPORT, RSU students arrested

Rivers State Police Command has arrested two men who are members of the cult group that killed three undergraduates of the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT and Rivers State University.

Parading the suspects on Wednesday at the Police Headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, told journalists that the command has zero tolerance for criminal activities.

As the suspects also confessed to carrying out other criminal activities in woji area of the state.

He said, ” This is not the first time they are undertaking this deadly mission. They confessed to other criminal activities that they have been carrying on, similar to what happened.

“In our avowed determination to crack and solve the crime, one of the suspects, Friday Akpan, in the wee hours of 1st May, 2020, took operatives to the forest and he identified the decomposing bodies of the undergraduates and narrated how five of them sexually assaulted the female student among the deceased students.

“They are callous. They sexually abused her and finally killed her. Further confession eventually led to the arrest of the fourth and fifth suspects.

“The fifth suspect was arrested in Warri yesterday, (Tuesday) which rounded off the arrest of all criminal gang members.”

The leader of the gang, 25-year-old Bright Iheachi, confessed to coordinating the killing of one of the victims, Nelson Nwafor.

Bright stated that ” we had a business together worth N4.6 million, since last year September, which he took the money all alone.

“Since then he has travelled to Ghana for sometime, then later came back. I tried to make peace with him, so I can recover back the money, but to no avail.

“So, on that fateful day, of 7th I had no other option when he came around. I had to abduct him with my men and then they were killed. That was all that happened.

“But please I beg the whole world and I plead to the whole people worldwide that i am very very sorry for my action Sir”.

You will recall that President Muhammadu Buhari, had demanded for immediate and intense investigation into the gruesome murder of three undergraduate students.

The order was issued few days ago, after the story of the dastardly crime broke.

The victims, Nelson Nwafor, Fortune Obemba and Joy Adoki were kidnapped at Choba community in Obio/ Akpo Local Government area, on the 7th of April, and killed at a forest in Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area, in Rivers State.

Nelson Nwafor and Fortune Obemba were students of the Rivers State University, RSU, while Joy Adoki was a student of Management Science in the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT.

Items recovered from the hoodlums include one AK-47, three magazines and 72 rounds of live ammunition.
