Emir Sanusi dethroned by Kano State Governor

Kano State government has dethroned the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi 11.

The decision to dethrone the Emir was reached during the state executive council meeting presided over by the State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Monday, March 9.

Confirming the development, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, Kano’s Secretary to the State Government (SSG) said that the monarch’s sack takes effect from Monday.

He said that the emir’s action violated the part 3 section A-E of Kano state law and that his removal was a decision reached after a lot of consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

Calling on Kano people to remain calm over the development, the SSG said that a replacement will be made in due time and made known to the public.

Meanwhile the immediate past representative of Kaduna Central at the Senate, Shehu Sani, had asked the governor to forgive Emir Sanusi of any wrongdoing.

Sani in a tweet on Friday, March 6, via his verified Twitter account, @ShehuSani, urged governor Ganduje to “forgive, forget and move on and let the Emir be.”

He reminded the governor that power is transient and as such, he may need the Emir someday. The Emir was facing a fresh probe by Kano state public complaints and anti-corruption commission over allegation of N2.2 billion land scam.

The governor had been at loggerhead with Emir Sanusi and many see the fresh probe as a continuation of the initial crisis that led to the creation of an additional four new emirates in the state.
