INEC declares Wike winner of Governorship election in Rivers State

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the Rivers state governorship election.
The Commission announced the result of the election on Wednesday, April 3, at the collation centre in Port Harcourt, with the incumbent governor scoring 886,264 votes to defeat Biokpomabo Awara of the African Action Congress (AAC) who polled 173,859 votes.
The margin of victory was at 712,405 votes while 249,324 votes were cancelled.
Meanwhile, the PDP successfully cruised to a comfortable victory in Rivers as the electoral umpire declared candidates of the party winners of the three Senate seats in the state.
PDP’s Senator George Sekibo won Rivers East senatorial seat, Betty Apiafi won the Rivers West Senate seat, while Barry Mpigi won Rivers Southeast district.
Recall that Wike called on elected senators of the state to work towards promoting the interest of Rivers people because they were elected on the premise of the supreme sacrifice of the people. In a statement by his special assistant on electronic media, Wike said people of the state sacrificed their lives for the victory of the PDP during the 2019 general elections, noting that on no account should they be relegated to the background. He made this known on Tuesday, April 3, when the state PDP agents presented the official INEC results east and west senatorial districts to the party at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
