The separate press statements by Lagos, Ogun and Osun state governments have declared Tuesday, June 12, 2018, work-free to mark the Democracy Day.
A statement signed by the Secretary to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the quest to entrench true democracy can only be linked to the significance of June 12, 1993, elections, adjudged as the freest and fairest in the history of Nigeria.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, the day would also be used to celebrate the recent conferment of a posthumous national honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic on the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola.
The Commissioner for Home Affairs in Osun State, Dr. Obawale Adebisi, also said in a statement that the public holiday was in line with a policy of the state to observe June 12 as Democracy Day every year.
The Oyo State Government has also declared Tuesday, June 12, 2018 as a public holiday throughout the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun said the holiday was to commemorate the anniversary of the June 12 1993 election generally and widely believed to have been won by Late Bashorun MKO Abiola.
